Okay, so I got a letter from these folks in August regarding an HSBC account ($1,188.13). I've just ignored it because I've been in a non-ending loop with pdls and had absolutely no extra cash to do anything.

However, since finding this site, I've been working on my pdl problem (most were illegal) and now am beginning to tackle the CC debts.

I've seen the posts on here about how quick these folks are to sue.

Has anyone had any luck in working out payments with them without going to court?

It will depend upon your negotiation powers. If you can negotiate with your creditor/collection agency and convince them about your situation, they will settle or consolidate the debts rather than taking you to the court. To know the required steps to settle your debts on your own with your creditor/collection agency, take a look at: http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/steps.html

Thanks for the information.

I may have read this but couldn't find it again. In this case, a collection agency is attempting to collect for HSBC. Should I contact HSBC first to verify that the agency is authorized to collect and whether they are willing to accept a reduced settlement, maybe even settle with HSBC directly. Or should I just contact the CA directly and ask for some sort of documentation. (The 30-day DV window has alread passed with this one.)
