From what I've read, it doesn't sound like IAG is going to be helpful at all. This sort of thing HAS to be illegal, right? They can't legally debit your account money when they have never even spoken to you or sent you anything, can they? I am wondering who we can go to - the AG? Anyone else?
Thanks so much,
Ashley
Yes, contact the AG. Also demand to speak with a manager at you
Yes, contact the AG. Also demand to speak with a manager at your bank. You did not authorize those payments and you want them credited back YESTERDAY. By law they have to investigate.
If they tell you the CA got a garnishment order, then you immediately contact the court because you MUST be served...if there is a judgment and you were never served then you can get it vacated for improper service.

Wait...I notice at first you say debit card, then you say credit card...which is it? If it is a credit card then it is just plain unauthorized charges and you complain to the credit card company that you never gave the company permission to run your card and you want them to reverse the charges else you will report them. By law if you did not authorize the charges, they have to investigate....because it is theft plain and simple.
Sorry about that. It's actually one of those Walmart money cards
Sorry about that. It's actually one of those Walmart money cards run by GreenDot. It works more like a debit card, because you have to have the money in there to use it, you don't have a line of credit. He has some of his pay direct deposited to the card every paycheck, which is what they took :(
It was just run today. The GreenDot people told him to wait to see if the IAG people collect the money (duh, of course they will), and if they do, then he can dispute the charge? Does this sound right?
They asked him if he'd filed a police report, which I never even thought of. He hadn't, but I think we may try to do that tomorrow. This is just a horrible time for this to happen - moving and he just started a new job so the next month and a half was going to be incredibly tight anyway, and now this! We really do need the money back yesterday!
I wonder how they even got the card number? It must be pending.
I wonder how they even got the card number? It must be pending....debit cards have two parts...the first run secures the money, then they have to put in again to get it. I am a little surprised greendot told you to wait and see....you should call them back and tell them you do not want to wait and see, that the money is needed to live and you did not authorize the transaction plain and simple.
Definitely file a police report! You should also contact IAG and inform them you are filing a police report for theft and will be reporting them to the FTC, your states AG, their state's AG and may even possibly sue them.
If they try to say you owe them a debt, tell them that it doesn't matter..you did not authorize the transaction and it is against the law to take someones money like that and you will be pursuing this to the fullest extent of the law. Then you can tell them to send a letter (have they ever send a collection letter?).
You will want to dispute the debt. By law they have to provide you with validation from the original creditor.
Oh! You should check your credit reports to see if anything fro
Oh! You should check your credit reports to see if anything from IAG is listed....more ammo for you to dispute. There is no lawful reason for them to have debited your account and the fact they did should make you take a heavy hand with them!
If the debt is on your credit reports challenge it. Make them prove it. Even if they do prove it, you should sue them anyway....they could have followed legal means to collect the debt and choose not too.
Thanks so much, goldenbeast! Here is where we are now. He called
Thanks so much, goldenbeast! Here is where we are now. He called IAG, they threatened him, etc. They had his information from a medical bill he HAD paid to them several months ago. They refused to tell him what this new charge was even for.
So the company when through the dispute process, which was denied, because they say IAG had all his info in their databases... so apparently this means since something was authorized once, it's ok to charge his account for anything whenever they want to... So Greendot is being no help whatsoever. We're printing out statements from where the first charge was made, and the second unauthorized charge, and he has a recent copy of his credit report, so we're going to take all that over to the police department tonight.
They have never sent a single thing in the mail about whatever this debt they're claiming is. I'm not even sure how we would dispute the debt since we don't know what it is and they refuse to tell us what it is for.
I am wondering, could we get the police in on a phone call to them, and have them listen while my fiance asks these questions and they threaten him and refuse to disclose what the debt is? That right there seems like it should be enough to bust them.

Oh, also! Where could we go to inquire about a lawyer on something like this? It doesn't seem like it owuld be very cost effective. Is it more of a threat than anything?
This needs to be reported to the Attorney General and the Federa
This needs to be reported to the Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission. Don't use that card anymore get a new one. IAG are scammers.
Ok so greendot is giving you the run around? Contact them again
Ok so greendot is giving you the run around? Contact them again and explain that it doesn't matter if they had an authorization for a prior charge-they had NO authorization for this one. Tell them you have filed a police report (make sure you do) and will fax a copy of it over if they like. Also inform them that they had better stop that payment and remove it, else you will be reporting them to your states finance commission (or whoever oversees banks), the AG, the BBB, and may very well include them in the suit for allowing an unauthorized charge after you complained.
Look on the credit report for something from IAG, then dispute it through the credit report. If it gets verified send the CRAs a written request for verification procedures, by law they have to provide you with the name and number of who verified the info. Then you need to send that person c/o IAG a debt validation letter challenging every aspect of the debt that is being reported.
You can look up consumer attorneys or if you research enough (and we can help ya) you can sue them pro se (on your own without a lawyer). It is rather simple process, small claims court is very easy. If needed you can sue everyone from the greendot, the CA, the person who verified to the CRAs and the CRAs....your rights are being abused and you do not have to stand for it.
We went to the police, and explained the whole situation to them
We went to the police, and explained the whole situation to them. The police said it sounded like a civil matter and wouldn't do anything - unless we found out that the original bill they collected for wasn't actually paid. This sounded like absolute BS to me, but I couldn't exactly argue with a police officer... However, my fiance called the hospital today , and they never DID receive the payment for the bill. So I guess the police would now take a report for fraud? Though this still does not seem right to me - they should have took a report in the first place!
So at this point, we need to go back to the police tomorrow, I think, and see what they say now. I hope whoever we get is more helpful. I'll pass on what you've said to my fiance. I think I'm better at explaining this whole thing clearly than he is but it's not my account, so it;s not really my place to, unfortunately....
By the way, there is NOTHING on his credit report from IAG. The cop didn't seem to care about this, either. I was really unimpressed. But again, not sure how you can really tell a cop he is wrong :P

They should take a report. Ask for a different officer. The simple fact of the matter is that this company stole from you and you have the right to report the theft.

You don't need to get a letter notarized....simply sending it certified mail return receipt is more than sufficient...a trick is to get the little green papers first, so you can include the certified mail number on your letter.
