Can the irs garnish my social security check

I work for State of NJ and we garnish social security, tax refunds and paychecks for child support. IRS CAN garnish your social security also, but not SSI. Your best bet would be to enter into a payment agreement with them. They have been very accommodating. I still owe IRS $7,000 and I pay them monthly right now - have been doing this for 2 years.

You can find the paperwork on the IRS website to apply for payment plan. That will stop them from garnishing your benefits.
