Invite them to go to court so they can prove they own the debt and that you owe it. Unless you already have a judgment against you, the last thing they want is to have to prove anything - they just want to scare you into paying.
What state are you in? What is the nature of the alleged debt? Who is the original creditor? When did the debt go into default?

I origianal debt was of about $3,600. from a credit card... Bank of America. I have paid half of my debt... I am about $50 away from half. since I was not able to pay my payment plan of $150 they are stating they are going bill me the entire balance and I can be taken to court. I can't afford the $150 but am willing to make some type of payment. But it's the $150 or I can settle by
paying $855. If I don't have the $150 much less the $855. my current balance is about $1,800

Do as you plan, pay what you can. They are just trying to scare you. Do you have a payment agreement in writing with them?
John P Frye is not a law firm in New Jersey, not sure what state to original poster is from. If they threaten legal action and are not licensed to practice law in your state, report them.
