I have a large group of bills, all medical. 90 to be exact. some of it has changed hands multiple times. i have it setup on a spreadsheet. so i can sort the data by creditor, account number (which sometimes all they give you is a claim number and that just makes everything confusing) ......there are multiple claim numbers on an "account" number. i still can't make much sense of it. i know things are listed multiple times, some is out of SOL and i went through all my bills most of which doesn't have a service date and out of the ones that do, im not sure it is correct. how can i verify my debt with these people, and not open myself up to anything like:
1. contacting the debtor again therefore starting the SOL time all over with again.
2. somehow giving them more than 30 days needed to verify their debt with an itemized bill and service dates
3.what if there is no paper trail?

thanks

First you send a DV letter to ANYONE who claims you owe them money, ANYONE. SOL does NOT restart by you contacting them it ONLY restarts when any payment is made on the account. SOL goes by the last payment on any account. Find our your states SOL and then check the last payment you made, if its past SOL send any collector a FOAD letter and tell them not to contact you again concerning this. In your DV letter-look on this site for a template and suit it to your situation-make sure you state they need to send you all chains of assignment so you KNOW who legally owns it and legally can collect-most can not do this. They send you something with your name on the original contract and that it states that they can charge interest, as most debt collectors can NOT, but they will try to. No matter what send anyone who claims you owe money a DV letter, it protects your rights and do NOT let anyone tell you different, its federal law and your right for proof. Also, if last payment was more than 7.6 years ago tell them to REMOVE it from your credit report and make sure you follow up with the credit bureaus.
