I have been receiving calls from the Department of Law and Investigation.....they will leave a voicemail saying its very urgent and serious that i call them back. They are Indian accent sepaking saying that this is Officer Alex Hoffman (Amreican name--go figure). I will not call them back or talk tot hem when they call. I was told that my name and ss# will have a red flag on it(what does that mean).

I've been receiving calls from Affidavit Consolidation Services prior to the call s from the Dept of law and Investigation...so I'm thinking they are connected with them somehow.

But when I do a search on the Departmetn of Law and investigation there's nothing but rip-off comments about them.

So, can anyone give me some advice on this matter. I refuse to talk to them.....I feel like I have to change my number and they have been calling me at work.....

Thanks

If you ever do talk to this "officer" ask him what exactly he is an officer of and inform him you are recording the conversation as you are sure the REAL officers will be keenly interested in him impersonating them. :)

You will be in trouble. Yeah right. You can not be in trouble for debts..there is no debtors jail any more. The fact they are even saying this is a classic indication that they are collecting illegally. I just laugh at them and tell them to come and get me.

U know this has made me so nervous and upse having to continue to deal with people with these people. So, u don't think anything will come of it? All u have to do is google them and read all the comments people have made----they are just trying to scam people. I wonder if anyone else has gotten these calls like I have? They are not even a legit company......It has made me very upset these last couple of days.

Ok, so y'all are saying that I should just go with the flow and not stress out about these so-called offficer's and their calls? Because they are scammers and crooks......preying on innocent hard working people just trying to get by in life. We'll y'all go on-line under Department of Law and Investigation and read the comments other people have put on there.....let me know what you think?
I'll keep you posted if anything else happens.

Thanks

You second-guessing yourself is exactly what they want. These folks use fear, uncertainty, and confusion to separate you from your hard-earned money. Do me a favor... Go to this page on the FTC website, and spend a little quality time reading. It's a FAQ page on the FDCPA, the federal law that regulates what collectors can and can't do. It'll confirm what we're telling you here.

Ok, you know they told me that was my last call yesterday...they have called me 6 x's today. One time they called my work and spoke to my manager and she told them not to call here anymore, they hung up real quick after they found out who she was.

So, I'm hoping it is finished...........

I'm not sure who the Department of Law and Investigation is calling about, since I didn't talk to anyone. But I received calls last month from Affidavit Consolidation Service about a so-called defaulted payday loan that I took out. But when I looked back on my bank statement for that particular month they were asking about---I didn't get any payday loan deposited into my account(I have received on-line paydays before)m
I'm thinking that Department of Law and Investigation and Affidavit Consolidation Services are connected.

I'm thinking you're probably right about that. Some of those places change identities like normal people change their underwear. Tryin' to stay one step ahead of the law, don't ya know.

Looking back at your past history, bank statements, and what-have you... Who did you borrow from at the time in question. And who was ACS claiming you owed last month? Same people? Also, please tell me what state you live in, how much you borrowed, and how much you've paid back.

When ACS called Jan 7, 2010, they claimed I borrowed from Advance Cash USA in the amount of $300. But I was supposed to have gotten it in June 2009 deposited into my account. The call back number is 813-319-2653, I went on to explain to them I would have to check over my bank statements. They wanted me to pay $508 to stay out of court. Not paying if I didn't get it. So, I looked and nothing was deposited in June 2009 except one payroll check and I quit using that account in the middle. Of June 2009. So nothing went in that account after June 15th. So ACS kept calling and I never answered them.
So, then Department of Law and Investigation picked up maybe a week or two after that. Don't know what they want not answering them......
I only have one payday loan out now and its with Upfront----not sure about them. I'm only paying interest for now and I'm from Mississippi.

Thanks

Ok, how do I get them to stop calling my work number....they will not stop? I'm getting really nervous and it's messing with my nerves again. I can't keep doing this, either serve me or leave me the crap alone. I'm still not going to send them money until they prove I owe it.....

Any suggestions please.................

That is really tricky because you have to give them a reason to not call you any more....I mean that you have to make it a waste of their time to call you. ACS is currently calling me as well, but since I know my rights and the laws I don't sweat it....I told the lady that she is going to have a hard time suing me since ACS doesn't hold a surety bond in TX and even a harder time garnishing my husband since Texas has no garnishment.

You can send them a cease com letter, but they will likely ignore it. You would have to actually sue them to get them off your back.

I just make it unattractive for them to call me, but this doesn't work for everyone because if they even think they are getting to you, they will continue to call. They get disgusted with me because I heckle them, make inane conversation and string them out.....it works for me as the calls have mostly stopped, but as I said, likely because I called their bluff and make it unattractive to call me......I think ACS was the company that ultimately tried to tell me they were going to take my house and I argued with them for a good several minutes that they had no right to take my barbie dream house.....I posted that in another thread.....dumb jerks didn't seem to know I didn't own a house and was just messing with them.

Anyhow, basically my point is that you can either sue them or just make them not want to call you.

Ok, they(Department of Law and Investigation) called me again at work this morning and was told again not to call here...........no calls on my other phone.

So, does this mean it's over for awhile at least, maybe they gave up.....I sure hope so, I'm not sure how much more I can take......

Thanks

I remember that! It was absolutely hysterical! GB, if you can find it again, you oughtta link it in here. I touch of humor is a good thing, now and again.

@ the original poster (gawd, I wish you'd register, so I'd have a user name to address you by...): These people are full of crap. I think we've proven that for you by now. If you still have dounts about what we're telling you, say so. We can like you directly to the relevant laws.

As to harassing a collector...

Once upon a while ago, I was dealing with MRS Associates on behalf of my wife. They're a collection agency of particularly unsavory ilk, and well known in this community. This fool calls up the house, and I answer. He's all rude and menacing-like, and demanding to speak to the wife. Sorry, chum. Ain't gonna happen. I ask him who's calling, and he tells me it's none of my concern, and to put the wife on. I tell him to piss up a rope. This goes on for a while, with me snickering and him getting medder and madder. Finally, I had to let him go, dinner ready or something like that. So I ask him one last time to identify himself and his company. He blurts out "this is MRS!" Really, says I. Mrs. who? Do we know your husband? The idiot got so flustered, he hung up.

this place is another alias of US NATIONAL BANK,the scam in INDIA.i advise anyone contacted by these losers to never speak to them again.instead use whatever call back number they leave on your v-mail and go to FTC.GOV and file complaints.they seem to change names like brett favre changes his mind about retirement.just don't even speak to them hang up if you somehow end up with them on the phone hang up,and keep hanging up.file the complaints.the FTC needs alot of complaints before acting so file them.

(((hugs)))

I don't have the specifics, but I believe your best bet is to send them a certified cease and desist letter. This would require that they verify your debt, and that they only contact you by mail. Once they have received the certified letter, any more contact other than mail is a violation.

Be careful how you word the letter. Nowhere on the letter should you admit to owing them any money. I hope someone here might have a sample for you.

Please breathe and relax. It's not a crime to owe money. It is a crime to harass and intimidate. You will be okay.

once again.this is a scam in INDIA.if called file a police report.then file an FTC complaint,in fact file several.use whatever number comes up on your caller id.do not engage these people.being they are in india letters would hard to send.just don't talk to them, return thier messages,or talk to them if they call you at work.

They have been calling today and they were told that I didn't work here anymore.....so that went ok for awhile. They just called back and was told the same thing but the Officer Sharon wanted the exact date so they could have it for there records and the person did not tell them anything. Then she went on to say if she wasn't told the date of resignation they would send an officer out to my work place to make sure we were telling them the truth or not about me still working.

Ok, I need some advice.....The Department of Law and Investigation is a scam right???????? Can they send someone out to my work place or they just trying to scare me??????

Please help I'm at my wits end with this and I don't know what to do.

Any comments will be welcome on this matter....Can someone help me???

this is a total scam.they can't do squat as they are in INDIA.stop talking to them.if they call your work hang up on them.have your boss and co-workers do the same.file police reports for the harrassment.also file FTC,and AG complaints.do not talk to this loser any further as he is part of a scam that either buys,or steals people's info from internet pdl's.nothingis going to happen to you except he will keep calling, and the threats will get ridiculous.cut him off now,and file the complaints.it is a waste of your time to talk to a complete scam.

I have called my local police dept and spoke with them, they told me this is a scam going around and not to worry about it. They told me if I wanted I could come in and file a report but I think we all know it probably wouldn't do much good. My call was from 646-727-4433 from Officer James Brown - telling me if was seriously urgent that I return his call....blah blah blah... and it's not the 1st time this has happened to me. Each time it's the guys with the Indian accent, the last time they called they used the exact same phrases telling me how seriously time sensitive it was that I call them back and then when I did they said I had to pay $1200 right then or be in court the very next day. I told them it didn't work that way, I had to at least receive papers in the mail from court....he didn't like that, plus he wouldn't even give me a phone number for company I supposedly owed money for which was some cash advance place as well. It all stems from filling out for loans on the internet, just learn your lesson to never to that again so they can never get your info again, it's really scary these assholes have our social security numbers, our work numbers, and whatever other personal info. I have Verizon and I blocked the phone numbers so they can't harrass me. If you can do that I suggest you do for peace of mind. Good luck!!

I'm glad your filing a police report, you can't go to jail for owing a debt, these are big time scammers! Please make sure you file complaints with the FTC and BBB also. You may also want to file a complaint with your AG too.
