I am a professional debt collector and have been for years. I am a stable family/business person who pays all my bills and get treated poorly over all kinds of minor things that are really uncalled for. "Wrong number" is a lot easier than some soliloquy about your phone history, and yet, I let people vent and apologize for the inconvenience. Also, sometimes people who pay their bills have things like a phone they signed up for to help a friend/family member get who let the contract default. The easiest thing to do is return the simple message and learn the purpose of the call. And For Those Who Don't Know: We can not leave the name of a collection agency or that the bill is about a debt on your voicemail. That would be a violation of the FDCPA.

There are a lot of nasty collectors out there. I have had my fair share of them. But I have also been lucky to get ones that will work with me and are not rude.
But the company that you are listing (LERS) was one of the bad ones I had to deal with. When someone threatens you on the phone when you are on your way to work, sayin that if you do not give your checking account number RIGHT NOW they will mark your account as refuse to pay and then say we will see you in court and then hang up, is not someone you want to deal with. Seeing as this was the first contact from the company. So I turned the whole matter over to my state DFI and when they got involved LERS got rid of the account. But thats only because they have had other violations in my state and they didn't want anymore trouble from my state.
So if you are a good collector and follow the laws great!!! But there are ALOT that don't. I know I could never be a collector, because I am too soft when people are in trouble.
