Your website states: "Once the collectors validate your debt, you need to check if at all they are licensed to collect debt in your state." Why not check this first? Who do you check it with, the state Attorney General's office?

Hi abcs
You can definitely check whether the collection agency is licensed to collect the debt or not before you go for debt validation.

The department from where you will get the information, depends on the state from where the CA is collecting the debt.

You can do a Google search for something like: [your state] search for business license. I just tried that for Virginia and it is the 4th link.

And not only Secretary of State, but many states have a separate licensing division (in Virginia it is called the State Corporation Commission).

What state are you in? Who is the collection agency in question?
