debt collectors and law firms

How do I go about finding out if somebody is licensed to collect debt in my state and if lawyers are liscensed to practice. Read where alot of collectors are trying to collect in states they legally cant. Thanks
How about some 4-1-1?
What's the name of the company in question? You should be able to find the state's list of bar-approved lawyers. I live in Florida, so I Googled "florida bar lawyer" and got a bunch of results that all pointed me to the official Florida Bar website. I was then able to search for the name(s) of the people who were pretending to be lawyers, and confirm that they were ineeed not lawyers, and were lying to me and violating FDCPA laws.
I am not sure where to look to find out if a company has been banned from practicing in your state, though. I'd start with Google.
