Oh god..My first summons!!! Help

Oh crap, I got my first summons today from a law firm trying to collect for Cap One. I have no idea what to do. I know I have to answer it but how?
I'm sure there are 100's of threads with a "HOW TO" for summons, could someone point me in the right direction??
Can I call the law firm directly and tell them I'd like to settle before it gets to court? Or should I not do that? I don't have the money to pay of the almost 8k I owe, and yes I do owe it...if I had the money I wouldnt be where I am. I can scrape together a $150 or $200 a month to pey them on a plan though.
Can someone here give me some words of wizdom or there own experience in this situation?
