I was getting calls from a debt collector over a doctor's bill. When I send the debt validation letter to the collection agency they didn't respond to it. But they have also stopped all collection activities. Now, I know that I owe this debt, I was just wondering how I can settle this account since the CA is no longer into the picture.

Once you request for a debt validation, the collection agency should furnish you with certain information, such as a written proof that shows that your debt has been sold off or assigned to them.

Along with that a statement of your account payment history which will help you to evaluate the total debt amount.

Remember, as per Federal Debt Collection Practices Act if the collection agency doesn' t validate your debt, they are not entitled to collect payments further.

As the CA didn' t turn up with substantial proof even after your request , I would suggest you to send them a Debt Validation Follow-up Letter via certified mail with return receipt requested.

Don' t forget to note down the number if they call up the next time and abstain from sending cash until and unless your debt is thoroughly validated.
