On 07/04/02 I went to the emergency room and ended up with a bill for $5000. Long story short, I've never been able to pay the bill and never so much as sent $1. (I know I should have paid something, but that's not the point now, really) I never acknowledged or denied the debt in any way, verbally or written.

Today I received a summons to court. The date they filed is 10/22/08. Connecticut has a 6 year statue of limitations but what I'm trying to figure out is when the 'clock' begins on that. The day I went to the hospital? The first time it was late? Etc??

Is there anything else I should be doing? I can't afford a lawyer. Also, the hospital was in Rhode Island, but I live in CT and the collection agency is also located in CT. Would we be following the state of CT SOL or Rhode Islands??

You would be following CT laws since that is where the lawsuit is being filed.

Since you never paid, I would definate say that this is out of SOL since most medical bills are due at the time service is rendered. I need to look at the state law....

yup....definately 6 years. Just respond to the summons that the debt is SOL.
