Can a CA list an account on my credit report if they do not have a valid license to collect in my state? I sent the CA a debt vaidation letter asking for contact information for agency they claim acquired their services to collect this debt, documentation that the agency owns this account, and a valid MI license. They did not provide any of the requested information. I attempted to locate the company they stated that hired them and it appears that it does not exist; couldn't find any info for this company through BBB or doing a search on Internet. Additionally, could not find a valid license listed with MI's Licensing Department for either the CA or the other company. I have sent two certified letters requesting this info and each time they send a copy of the check I cancelled. I am not refusing to pay, however I want to insure I am paying the correct company. Do they have to provide contact infomation for the company they state hired them?

well, according to the FDCPA, if you ask them in writing for the name and address of the current holder of the debt, they must provide it to you. So, if you wrote to them asking for it and they did not provide it, then yes, they are in violation of the law.

Also, could you tell us the names of the CA and the current holder of the debt? Many times, people here have already dealt with the same CA youre trying to deal with and we can often provide good insight into how to deal with them. Generally speaking, if they are not licensed to conduct business in your state, then they cannot take any collection effort against you legally.

Thx u for your reply. The CA agency is Trident Asset Management LLC in GA. They stated OPS 9 hired them to collect my account. I can not find any contact information for OPS 9, and have never been contacted by them. Actually, I think they made up that company name when I told them that I knew that they do not have a valid license to collect in my state. Yes, I specifically asked for contact information for OPS 9 and they totally disregarded it. Can I write to the credit agency requesting that they be removed from my report because they do not possess a valid license to collect in my state and failed to supply documentation proving that OPS 9 owns this account and has the legal authority to collect in my state?
