and a bill collector is trying to collect a bill that i show was paid off in 1999 but they say it was 2004 what can i do?

Do you have any type of proof you paid it? Now, the burden of proof is still up to them, though if you claim you paid it they will want to see proof of this and it would make things easier if you have something..but if it is from 1999 I can understand you not having anything anymore.
Is this debt listed on your credit reports?
