Nco/er

So I'm looking over my credit reports and see an account being reported by NCO that was paid off over a year ago. I call them and they tell me they have absolutely no record of that account at all, so I guess I'm going to have to fax them that portion of my CR.
She does tell me though that they have a file on my from Sprint that was returned to the original creditor and she would remove that from my file.
I haven't had a Sprint phone in over 4 years, and had completely forgotten about it and not heard one single thing about it. So, after she told me that, I looked through my CRs again and found the Sprint account only it was being reported by ER Collection. No joke, as I'm looking at this I receive a call from ER asking how I would like to take care of the Sprint bill. I asked what there connection to NCO is and she told me there is no connection. This was evidently a miraculous coincidence that I was just talking about this with NCO, that I have not heard about in 4 years, and they just now decided to call.
As I had her on the phone, I started going through my CR and I noticed 3 inquiries from ER. I told her these would need to be removed as I did not authorize them. She told me she did not know what an inquiry is. Wow!
Anyway, has something like this happened to anybody else. Anybody know of a connection between NCO and ER. Are all these collectors in cahootz with each other?
