thanks for the quick response!
i guess the usual, send a debt validation? do i send a c & d to them or will that make it worse? (I have to at least give them the proper phone number i hate for my mother to have to deal with this..) i am up for a battle, to be honest - i am so broke about now that i literally cannot pay them.. besides, nothing really surprises me anymore.

NCO generally buys their debt although they do still collect for creditors as well. I would send a C&D because they aren't calling you at your residence. I would call them up, ask what they are calling for and then send a DV.

thanks for the advice :)
i will call them tonight, my mother finally answered the phone.. they said they were calling on behalf on capital one but would not give any info unless she provided them with a social security number. she refused and asked who they were calling for.. they said they cannot tell her anything but they are calling from capital one and needed a social security number to tell her more.
she hung up on them and blocked their number (she got all freaked out..)
i really do not know what to think.. i do not have any capital one debt.. i settled with nelson watson last year (with help from this board!) my parents have a capital one card but do not have any type of balance on this.
any suggestions? :?:

In your settlement with Nelson Watson, was there a stipulation that any remaining balance not be sold off?

Nascar, thanks for responding :) That as my concern - I have the paperwork for it at home.. but to be honest it was not even that good of a settlement, i had a $300 credit card which somehow ended up a $800 balance and gave them almost $700 (I believe, i do have paperwork at home and i know a lot of this is mentioned on old threads here..)
I am trying to remember right now how it was worded.. maybe settled than less than full amount or something?

i know that's right about them being scumbags! i tried to call on my lunch but could not get through.. i will call right after work and if it is for me, i will send dv and c & d.
what actions should i take if nelson watson sold the remaining balance? this never happened to me before.. :(

okay thanks so much everyone! i called them and it turns out they were not for me.. i guess i became very untrusting about collectors these days!!
but it is still a weird story.. they asked for my father who does not have a capital one card (my mom does but has zero balance on it..)
it turns out his brother - who he has not spoken to in at least five years - owed capital one and used him as a contact name and phone number.. i am glad i called but it is a weird situation.
thank you so much to everyone for helping me though!

I doubt he used your father as a contact. Lexis/Nexis and a couple other sites will list any names associated with his attached to public records. Like lawyers, you can always tell when a CA is lying: Their lips are moving.

to be honest we were all just relieved that none of us owed them anything! i really have no idea where they got that from - at first when he said he did not have a card with them they said they probably got the wrong person.. but we have an unusal last name and after he pushed they mentioned his (out of state, no less!) brother. than they asked for his phone number, which he does not even have.. so who knows??

update: i guess nascar was right - my dad is so stubborn, he really believes my uncle used his name.. but NCO called again (even after saying - twice! - that they blocked my parents' phone number!!) and asked for my uncle or his grandmother, who passed away many years ago. my mother gave him my uncle's phone number.. my dad is so angry at my uncle  but i know he did not give these names!
but anyway, is there anyway to stop the calls before it starts a family fued?
