I'm sure hoping you can answer my question, i was recently contacted by Palisades collections, from NJ, for an auto loan that was written off 15 years ago, my question is can they legally come after me now, and do i have to pay them. This bill according to them is $11,980.00, they have offered a settlement of half, and when i ask for documentation, they told me that it would take 2 months to get it, and that would void out the offer. Also they call call repeatedly, and when i answer they hang up. When i told this person i was thinking about disputing it, until i received more information he gave me a fax number, and told me i had to file my dispute via fax.
I have no issue paying the bill but after researching palisades and reading all the complaints, and how they have done other people, i just want to make sure i dont get the shaft by them.
My question is how do i protect myself.
Thank you

YOU send them a DV(Debt Validation) letter CMRRR. Thats is your right by Federal Law! Odds are they are giving you the run around because its out of SOL, meaning they can not sue you for it, you technically still owe it but can NOT be sued for it. Does it show on your credit report if not, paying anything on it will put it back on for 7 years with a negative rating. Check the SOL for your state, and I believe its out of SOL, and if it is then send them a FOAD letter

What state are you in? If this was written of 15 years ago, it's not going to be on your credit report and it's very likely past SOL. I would send a C&D letter. I wouldn't even mention SOL, just C&D.

Still check your credit report, Palisades is known for putting old accounts back on CR's. Thats why I said to check your report.

From what I just found Indiana, where you live now, SOL is 10 years for written and I believe auto sales fall under that. So, if no payment has been made in the last 10 years send them a cease and desist letter. You can not be sued for it, but 1 payment starts it all back up again, credit reporting and the SOL. Send them the cease and desist letter, send it CMRRR so you have the green card back for your records. If by some stupid chance they try and sue you-your defense is its out of SOL.
