i have heard of people losing their homes for a couple of thousand dollars of credit card debt. i know in NJ it can be done but i have no idea how or why. it was my understanding, though that the house is not actually sold that the buyer would just be a lien holder and when the owner goes to sell one day they would have to satisfy that debt.
i could be wrong, of course but that is how i thought it was done.
i am not sure how she would not have known though? for foreclosures, it is advertised in the newspapers and the attorneys and sheriff office usually tells the deft. the sale date.. it is not always served per say, but they are notified.
