Collection agency - original account number

If the collection agency suing me enters the entire account number in a letter to me would this mean they probably have valid proof of the debt or are these companies always given the entire account number no matter what? Sorry, I'm not very educated on this.

They could easily have the account number, it is usually one of the things sold in those big portfolios. You should still ask for validation. Sometimes all they have is the account number and your name..and that alone does not constitute proper validation.
