Hi I am beginning to work on paying off some old debts that are negatively affecting my credit. I absolutely hate dealing with collection agencies ... If I am going to pay the debt, do I have to remit the payment to them or is going back to the original creditor an option?

Thanks for any information and guidance you can provide.

CpinTX, if you want to deal with the original creditors (OC) and not the collection agencies (CA), you will have to request the OC to pull back the account from the CA. If the OC agrees to pull back the account, first get the agreement in writing. After some days check your credit report for the updation on the accounts. The accounts will now be listed under the respective OCs. Then you can get payment agreement in writing from the OCs, after which you can start making the payments.

However, you should remember that only if the accounts has not been sold off, can the OCs pull back the account. Another thing that you can do to remove the negatives from your accounts is request the OCs or CAs whomever you pay to agree to a "Pay for delete" (PFD) agreement. If they agree to PFD, all the negatives from your accounts will be removed.
