I had a cell phone account with AT&T Wireless that was terminated in 2003. I owed them money, they sent me to a collection agency, and I settled that account in 2004 for just over half of what I owed AT&T.

Palisades is now sitting on all three of my credit bureaus attempting to collect the remaining amount of the settlement. I rummaged through old paperwork and found the settlement offer letter from the original collection agency, and I hand wrote the check number I paid the settlement with.

I faxed over the settlement letter to Palisades, and they told me that it wasn't sufficient proof that I had paid, even though the amount they are attempting to collect is exactly the amount of the difference between what I originally owed and the settlement offer.

I have contacted my bank to have them hunt down the check from 2004, but after seeing thousands of message board posts and rip off reports about this company, I'm a little worried that the cleared check from the original collection agency won't be sufficient. In addition, I'm worried that sending them a copy of my check is going to give them access to my bank account!

Should I send them a copy of the cleared check copy?

I should probably also note that I already have disputed this with all three credit bureaus and Palisades verified the debt.

You should also send them a validation letter (you can find a good template via my signature) send it certified mail, return receipt requested. If they cannot validate then they cannot legally report to the credit reporting bureaus as it could be construed as inaccurate information.

Thank you, JCEMT!! I was thinking this morning that it makes no sense for me to go out of my way to prove to someone that I DON'T owe them money! I think I'll go ahead and send the validation letter. Again, thank you!

Funny you mention that, FYI, because I called the original collection company and asked them for that. They told me that when AT&T stopped using them, they took all of their records back and they no longer have any information regarding accounts they worked for AT&T.

In the case of debt buyers it comes down to the fact that they have very little information to work with and since it no longer belongs to the original creditor they probably will not have anything further to do with it, which means the info that they have is all the info they will ever have.
