I need help dealing with debt collectors

I have been getting harassing phone calls from Bennett Deloney law offices(debt collectors) for a couple months now. I answered the phone today and they asked for me, I said this is her. I was told there were some outstanding checks in their office that need to be paid now or they will go to the next step. I am wondering what legally they can do since this is a collection agency. I have gone on the website and it says they do litigation for companies. I want to pay them but I do not have the full amount of money they want. I am afraid they will have the cops at my door now since I can not pay what they want.

Relax! you cannot be send to prison because you could'nt pay up on time. tell them that you are aware that by calling you up they are violating fdcpa act and you would lodge a complaint against them. meanwhile, check with your creditors that how much you owe with them and you would soon pay them up when possible. if your checks have bounced, and do not have any resources ask them to defer the payments.

It all depends on whom the checks were written to. If a PDL, then chances are no, you won't be going to jail. If not, then FYI is certainly right to say that the possibility is there.
