Palisades is harassing me. They are trying to collect from me a debt which was I believe charged off in 1995. The debt occurred in Texas and the last name on this $1000+ debt no longer is mine in fact.At one point I was told on the phone that I would be sorry if I ignored them. I am feeling quite stressed and need to know the right approach to take. :( :?

Get a validation letter out to them immediately by certified return receipt mail. Be sure you deny that this is yours and make them prove that the Statute of limitations has not run out on it which it has. They are well known bottom feeders that buy old expired debts and try to intimidate people into paying. Please file a complaint with the Attorney General in the state where they are located. Eventually the AG will notice all the complaints and file a suit to stop these people

This debt is really old and you have rights under the fdcpa & Fcra in dealing with it. If you wish to be bothered with them, send a dv letter to them immediately certified return receipt. If you are positive the debt was charged off in 1995 with no payments since then, you could also send them a full cease & desist letter stating sol has expired for reporting & civil action. This letter would also be sent certified return receipt mail.
