12 year old verizon debt

I just got a letter from palisades collection to my indiana address with a last name I haven't had for 12 years and haven't had since I've lived in michigan 12 years ago. They say I owe for a verizon bill. I don't think I even had an account with verizon and I've never heard anything about it before this.
It is possible that an ex used my name to set up telephone service (it wouldn't surprise me) but I have no way to check that out.
There is an 800 number to call but I hesitate to call and let them know they have a 'live' one. Any suggestions about how I should proceed?
