Allied and credit rating

While on vacation in Fl. my son became ill. He went to the hospital and waited four hours to see a Dr. after which they charged him five hundred dollars and sent him on his way.
He didn't pay the bill while there because he was mad.
After he returned home he received a bill from the hospital stating that if he paid right away he would only have to pay two hundred and fifty dollars, so he paid them. That was last summer. Now he is getting calls from allied interstate saying he hasn't paid his bill and now his credit rating is ruined.
He is very upset about ruining his credit over this bill.
He tried to find out what was going on from Allied but they just gave him the run around. He even asked to talk to the supervisor but they told him she wasn't in. Now they called and told him they are handing it over to another collection agency. He has told them from the beginning that he is willing to pay the bill again as long as it doesn't affect his credit. They said it's to late for that.
He has never heard from the hospital only Allied. Are they right about it already ruining his credit and how can he get out from under this?

He needs to send them a debt validation letter. If they are reporting on his credit report, he has the right to make sure they are reporting it correctly. They must prove he owes this debt.

Does he still have a copy of that letter? If so, this could turn out to be a very expensive embarrasment for some collectors.
