I have received a copy of my credit report stating I owe this collection agency for three separate debts owed. They state that the original creditors are from "Direct Brands". I requested a detailed explanation of debt owed as I do not know who or what this company is. The sent me statements stipulating that the creditors are Book of the month club (owe $107.33), Doubleday book (owe $94.28) and the good cook book club (owe $71.95).

I have no idea who they are and if I would order books it wouldn't be for these outrageous prices!

How am I able to fight this and remove it from my credit report? Ive written letters to the credit bureaus and they have replied as "verified". Should I request a copy of some sort of written document? Am I able to fight and obviously state "identity theft"? I need to remove these 3 collection accounts from my credit report as it has hurt me in more ways than one.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks much...

If you are sure that you do not owe these debts, it may be that somebody else had used your personal information and ordered these books. So it might be the case of identity theft, but i doubt this because if somebody has stolen your identity for financial gain, why would they use it for such a small amount. You can file a complaint online with FTC and become a registered victim of identity theft.

A book club is not like getting a credit card. If you have a junk mail offer with your info printed on it, someone could conceivably snag it and mail it in, changing the address. They could pay via money order an original order to get the book club to trust them, move the account to online notification only, and then order a few big expensive books. Then they would get offers from other book clubs (again, to their address but in your name) and on it would go. As to motivation, who knows? It depends on the person involved, if such a thing happened.

If you are *POSITIVE* it is not yours, I would file a Mail Fraud claim with the Postal Service. Take a copy of that (or those) claim(s), and send a Dispute to the Credit Reporting Agencies on whose report(s) the alleged debts are showing. This will put the CRAs on notice that they need to make sure that the CAs need to ask the original creditors to verify the debt also. That *should* force them to have to produce the original card (or at least a scan) that they used to sign "you" up, so you (and USPS, for that matter) can more fully investigate.

I am disputing this bill from this company and or agency. I sent the books back to them and asked that do not send anymore to me. The ID number is: 01439925. The company needs to keep better records of the accounts. Thank you .
