This debt is in an old married name that I had in 1992-1996. There is nothing on my credit report negative at all. I am assuming that this may have been a valid debt at one point. I am in Ohio, which has very confusing SOL laws. After rechecking the shady Verification they sent to me, it appears that Portfolio bought this debt from a midland financial/the associates.. That is who they claim the debt was origanally from. I dont know if Midland is the Associates or another collection agency. These bottom feeder scum collection agencies are making me sick. I dont know when the Associates charged off .. I would imagine in 1996 0r 1997 at the latest. I honestly dont recall the debt, it has been so long.

I'm guessing Portfolio sent you a "statement" on their letterhead as validation? If so, this is not proper validation. They need to send you something from the original creditor (ie: statements, contract) and not just something on their letterhead listing a name and amount of this alleged debt.
If that is the case, I would send them another letter advising them they have not satisfactorily validated the debt. If you're feeling especially generous, you could give them another attempt.
Also, they cannot continue collecting on this debt until they properly validate it. I am suing Portfolio right now for this, among other things.

 Yes, that is what they sent me as validation. I STRESSED to them I wanted VALIDATION and the crap they sent me stated it was verification of the debt. Thank you for your advice. 12 years old this debt must be if not older.
