I received a call from Powell Law Firm about a returned payment from where I stopped my account after finding out that online payday loans are illegal in my state. I sent the payday loan companies a letter by email informing them I had paid them more than the principal back and that these types of loans are illegal in my state. I received no response from them. I am now receiving calls from Powell Law Firm. I told the caller today not to call me at work, when they try calling my cell I avoid the call since I do not know the number. Now they are calling my job to verify my employment. Are they able to garnish my wages or something for this or is this just a scare tactic because they know I am at the same number they called?

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!
If payday loans are illegal in your state, then you're only required to pay back the principal amount. If you have already done that, then there is no need to make further payments. Yes, this can be a scare tactic. If they call you at your workplace again, then inform them that you file lawsuit against them. By federal laws, they can't call you again and again at your workplace.
