I received a call today from Mike Nelson from Powell Law Office.

He states that I owe over $900 from two payday loans (PDL Ventures, orginal amount of $300 and National PayDay Loan, original amount $390).

Then his associate Carl Nierode came on the phone. They demand that I pay the balances on these two accounts, over $900 and that I pay it today. I ask that a letter be sent to me with the information on the accounts, such as the amounts, original creditors, original balances, and when the loans were obtained.

Honestly, I had quite a few online payday loans out at one point. He said that I had already paid three of the accounts in their office in 2009/2010, but that they went by the name Lighthouse Recovery Associates.

Am I, by law, required to pay the full $900 balance? Or am I responsible for the original loan amounts?

Also, he said that he would send me verification of these debts by email but would not send me a letter because there was no guarrentee that I would receive it and that I was using this request for verification as a "stall tactic". If I owe something, I would be happy to take care of the debt, but not until appropriate documentation is received.

He stated that I was stalling, had no intention of paying these loans and that he would inform his attorney, Annette Powell, that I refused to pay what I owe.

*** Does anyone know anything about this "company" or know what I can do to help my situation?

I told him that I was neither admitting to the debt, nor denying the debt until I had proper documentation.

Thanks for your help!!

You need to go to the PayDay loan forum here and learn how to deal with illegal lenders, that site will tell you if they are legal or not, if they are not all you owe is the amount borrowed and nothing else. Him saying what he did is a red flag that they are illegal. By federal law if you owe a debt they are required to send you the details in writing FIRST. When they say different thats when you know they are illegal, threats are illegal and forcing you to pay NOW is illegal. Go through the payday loan site here and it will give you ALL the info you need to fight them.

Now a Michael Wheeler (says he his a senior associate with Powell Law) is calling me from 303-800-1660 or 1-866-520-1240 ext 1658 stating that either me or my attorney must call him by 5pm tonight with a resolve in this matter. They emailed me a letter and put todays date on it but will not actually send me a letter via mail... is this the same thing? They say that by sending the letter in the mail that I'm what they call, and I quote "a staller... someone who uses excuses to buy more time for debts that they do not want to pay".

I'm starting to get upset because I feel like they are harassing me. He finally just told me to have a good day and hung up on me.

write to: Supreme Court of Colorado, Attorney Regulation Counsel
1560 Broadway, Suite 1800, Denver, Colorado 80202
This is the only place you can make a complaint to about a law office acting as a debt collector. I got a new phone which was recycled that had belonged to a person that owed money Powell was trying to collect on. They harassed me for over two years until I finally found out who they were. There is a lot more to the story but the court is the only place to complain to, I know from making so many complaints against them to so many places. The court found Annette Powell in violation of laws. this is March 24, 2011 still waiting for more information from the court on my case.

Powell Law office is "collecting" for a payday loan default. I have been told by someone there that Powell Law office, Lighthouse Recovery, and United Debt Holdings are all the same office. I found this when someone from Powell Law office called and I asked if United Debt Holdings no longer was handling this account, I was told then they are all the same office.

I actually thought this Carl Nieroee guy offered me a decent settlement offer on my collection.

FYI Powell Law office DOES send letters. I got one in the mail yesterday validating my debt. Since they are fighting you on sending you a letter, I would question whether they are collecting on legit accounts since you say you have already paid them something.
