What's the preferred way to communicate with collection agencies? Is e-mail recommended? There is an electronic trail and it's fast.

Hi simcha,

The best way to communicate with the collection agencies is in writing. You can first talk to the collection agency and then try getting an agreement on whatever you are planning to negotiate with them. For me getting written agreements is important as it helps you in retaining proof of the agreements.

Hello,

Each collection agency is different, and each collector within that agency will be different too.

I would try to communicate via telephone first (because that's what they prefer). If you find that the collector handling your case is rude you can choose to communicate via fax. It's often difficult to get an email address from them, and if you send it to their general email it's not likely your email will be seen by the right person.

Good luck!
