Premarriage debt
Date: Mon, 09/10/2007 - 07:44
I am a breast cancer survivor of six years. I would like to get married the first of next year. I owe an existing debt that is in collections that is accepting a nominal fee until I can come up with the payoff. My question is: Will my new husband be liable for this debt if I marry? This is really important to me because it is MY debt and not his. I don't want my bad news to be his burden. I intend to pay this off eventually but just cannot right now. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks, Gail

I would depend on the laws of your state I believe. There is no reason however for them to find out your married if you keep paying on time. If you stopped paying the agencies use skip tracers to find you through records such as marriage certificates.
