My husband keeps on getting letters from these people. Every time we do the amount is different for the same company (Capital One) I pulled his credit report yesterday and they do not appear on the report as a collection and in a conversation that I had with my husband he's never owned a Capital One card. What can we do?
P.S. I did notice that there were addresses on the report for places that we have never lived in. Could this be the mix up?

If you look at the side bars on this page there is a link called "sample debt letters". Click on that and look at the Debt Validation letter.
You want to send one of those to Portfolio. Send it Certified Mail Return Receipt Requested. Make them prove that you guys truly owe the debt. Just make sure you send it CMRRR that way you can prove they received it.
If your husband doesn't owe it, then they aren't going to have proof that he does.
Hope this helps a bit. I'm sure there is more you can do and someone more knowledgeable than I will be along to help you!
