Hi all and thanks. Myself and former roommate broke a lease. We were summoned to court over $1800 owed. I showed, he did not. Well judgement for that amount was awarded to the landlord. How can I prevent my wages from being garnished? My old roommate is long gone and will never be found, so I am probably liable for the entire amount. Thanks!

Garnishment could be enforced by the court with the judgement already awarded. OH SOL on judgements is 21 years (renewable very 5) and garnishments go by the federal standard:

Federal Law exempts from garnishment 75% of disposable earnings per week, or an amount = to 30 x federal minimum hourly wage, whichever is greater. Where federal law provides larger exemption, it supersedes any state law.

I read on a legal advice website that you can file a dispute if your income is used to support children or spouse. I am not sure if that is true but it sounds realistic.
