They faxed something to my work today asking for personal information: salary, hours worked, date of hire, position. The HR department asked me if I knew who these people were and I told them NO. They said that they won't give out salary information without my consent, which I will not give.
Is it against the law to ask for salary information without my consent?
Anyway, I am going to try and work out payments with them, but they are very rude and hard to deal with. I was hoping that someone might have had some experineces with them and could help me out. I also would like to know if they are an actual collection agency or not before I make any type of payments arrangements.

Collectors are allowed to verify information about the person's present job. This is called skip-tracing. I guess they want to keep you within their reach when you are paying your debts.
Give them a call and know more on the account. By laws, they are required to give you information about the debt received from your original creditor. Verify the details and see if there is any item to dispute. If you find errors, send them a verification letter. They will check with the original company and correct your file.
Do you know the name of the original company? Call them and make your payment proposals. They will accept money from you if your file is still in their system. In that case, you won't have to deal with the CA.

I have dealt with a company called PRS Professional Recovery Services. Not sure if it is the same one.
Regarding the form sent to your employer, IT IS ILLEGAL to ask for your salary, work hours, date of hire, and position. I just settled two cases for this very thing. There are several federal cases on this subject. I won't bore you with the case information. Just know, skip tracing is legal, but when it comes to your employer, they can verify the phone number, address, and that you work there, and this is only if they do not have your current home address and phone number.

That is the right agency. Did you or anyone out there have any problems dealing with them? They are very easy to deal with, which kind of scares me. It is almost too good to be true. Any advice from anyone that has dealt with them would be greatly appreciated.

Well I just found your posts and I received a "collection attempt" notice from Echelon Recovery Inc POBox 1880 Voorhees NJ Phone 866 464 1013 Have been trying to figure out who they are. I have no Chase MAnhattan Accts. and they seem to get around by many names with the same PO address. Also the envelope was mailed to me From a Michigan zip code and the return envelope window would have the mail to NJ. Sounds like a scam- any new info out there on this address? Also they say they are collecting for The Bureau Inc. Can't find anything on them either.

I am currently trying to settle with PRS. My offer letters just get an automated response from a Jen Daniels. Letter says to call her but everytime I call I get a empty voice mail box ext. 1073. The main number is 866-464-1013 but I get calls from other number I assume is associated with PRS. Hope to hear from Jen to settle someday!

I have been getting repeated phone calls from PRS. They are rude and arrogant and will not accept that someone gave my number falsely. I get phone calls constantly despite being reassured that they are going to remove my name and phone number. I have reported them to the FCC and the NJ State Attorney General's Office. I filed a complaint. The arrogance of the supervisor with whom I spoke, Justin Hall, is of little concern. However, it did not sound very bright, which should be of great concern to anyone having to deal with them. I have the following numbers for them: 1-866-784-1160; 1-800-972-7984, 1-800-373-9358 and in addition to teh 221 Laurel Road address, they also have PO Box 1880, also Voorhees, NJ 08043. I hope as many of you as possible will file a similar complaint and get these vultures to act responsibly.

I had a case with PRS. I paid the balance and for the next four months, they kept calling saying I owed money. I finally told them that the balance was paid and if they called me again I would contact my lawyer. That was six months ago. Last week I am looking at my paystub and see that a wage garnishment was put on it. I found out it was from the original creditor that hired PRS (The case I paid off six months ago). I never received a letter saying that the garnishment was on. I contacted PRS and after four days, they finally confessed that they forgot to send the payments to the creditor. Be very carefull when dealing with PRS. Make sure to keep all receipts, names, phone numbers, addresses, times of calls, basically everything.

Sorry to hear about your loss. A lot of people are in the same boat as you. Now PRS can try to sue you for the money. But if you filed bankruptcy, they can't touch you. Something to think about.

How would it be in anyone's interest to work with a bunch of crooks and liars?
Is that even remotely possible?

OK, After talking to my attorney about settling an unpaid mortgage which I was about to pay over $20,000 to PRS to settle on he informed me I'd be INSANE to do so.... These guys are VERY shady characters. They go around buying your debt for a small fraction of what you owe... Then they harass you trying to get you to pay the full balance which is how they make their money. If you do manage to "settle" with them they will turn in the unpaid portion of the debt to the IRS with a 1099 and show it as an income you made which you then will get a surprise bill from uncle Sam wanting his 30% of after you've settled. On top of that they will sell the unpaid portion of your debt to another collection agency that will end up contacting you in the future trying to collect the debt you already settled on... but just the part of the debt that you didn't already pay... Big hassle, I suggest calling a lawyer, then when they call give them your lawyers phone number. Once you have legal representation they are no longer allowed to harass you.
PRS & The Bureau
How did you make out? I cannot find anything on the Bureau either. Did they charge you interest with out telling you?

I had a 2nd on a house we had to short sale, so I just received a letter from PRS stating they would settle for 20%( after almost a year of phone calls). I just called Clark Howard's consumer line and was told by a volunteer that I have more rights than they do, and to send them a drop dead letter. If they try and take me to court,(he didn't know if they would go that far) I don't have the money to pay them, so I would probably win.
Here's a sample letter fyi.
To Whom It May Concern:
I have been contacted by your company about a debt you allege I owe. I am instructing you not to contact me further in connection with this debt. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act, a federal law, you may not contact me further once I have notified you not to do so.
Sincerely,

This guy names Don perrizo? from PRS got wrong information from somewhere and accused my dad as debotor.. I kept explain that its diffrent person with same name since credit history and last 4 digits of SSN was diffrent but that MoFo was kept saying stop playing game and behonest to us. I couldn't resist and hung up the phone.
Is there any where I can place complaints? I know collectors are nasty but its for debitors...They have no right to call poeple with similar names and harrase them.
