I have a credit card that was charged off by a bank, then was sold to a CA. That collection agency then sold it to a different agency. My credit report shows 3, THREE! separate collections for the same credit card. Is this legal? IF a collector sells that debt, do they have to remove their claim to it on my credit report?

Thanks everyone

Keith

hi Keith, there is a relatively simple way to handle this.

Send a dispute on these accounts to the credit bureau itself. Inform them that they are reporting the same debt multiple times on your credit file. They should take the old reports off no problem. At least, that is how it worked out the last time my wife had duplicates on her Trans Union report. They took the extra entries off no problem.

Heres a bigger question--did the CAs contact you at all, or did they just report it on your credit files without attempting to collect from you? What I would do is send the current CA a debt validation letter by certified mail. Once you get the green card back in the mail that shows when they received your letter, they are required by law to note on your credit files that this debt is disputed. They cannot leave it reported as they have it now--illegal to do so. And, whats more, if they cannot provide proper validation on the debt, then they cannot legally continue reporting the debt on your credit reports at all.
