old debt, new collection agency

Hi,
I have a question about some old debts. My husband took out a loan a few years back, It was around $5,000. Back then he was in school and he was never able to repay it. So then the agency he got it from closed down but sold their accounts to some other bank or collection agency or something like that. And since it has been a long time he was supposed to pay, there are several fees added to the loan and the total amount is almost$10,000. So my question now is, does he have to pay this new agency ,by law, since they aren't even the one who gave him the loan back then? They threaten to sue him, can they do that?It has been 4 years now and each time it is a different company calling. Is that legal? And also, they don't call him but his family and tell and threaten them to sue my husband. Is that legal to go and harass family members?
