Should I start making payments to a CA on a debt if I know that I have to repay the outstanding balance?

Should I rely on the words of the collection agency? Few days back, a CA contacted me to make payments on an account I have yet to pay back in full. Will I start negotiating with them or ask them to validate the debt?

well did you get a collection letter from this place?if not then no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!do not take a strangers voice over the phone as legit.demand the basic letter via USPS.then send the debt validation letter.
