Can colleciton agencies report debt that is over 7yrs?

I have several old items scheduled to be removed from my credit report at the end of this year&beginning of next year. These old items are now popping up on my credit report under collection agencies that I have never heard of. Is this legal?
I've hired an attorney to help dispute these items. Is this wise?

A collection company is allowed to report your account but will be required to remove it 7 years from date of first delinquency.You would find this date on your credit report from original creditor account.
