JCC / Resurgent / Sears Debt

I wish I had known about this group last week!
I received a call from Resurgent six days ago asking me if I wanted to take advantage of an offer to settle my debt on my Sears card. I told Diane that I had paid that debt off last year with my tax refund and she said she would give me time to check with my bank and hung up.
I remember paying this, my sister remembers me talking about paying it and yet I can’t find any trace of it on my bank account.
I called the number left on my answering machine and got a computer that said “Thank you for calling, all our representative are busy …†blah, blah, blah that never mentioned the name of the company.
When a live person answered all I got was “Hello.†I asked who this was and she said “Dianeâ€. I had to ask what company and she talked so fast I had to have her repeat it twice to understand that it was “JCC†or “Resurgentâ€.
I asked if she had sent out the verification of debt letter and this seemed to throw her off, she finally admitted it had been mailed seven days ago and I should have gotten it by now. Diane said she would fax a copy of the debt verification to the local branch of my bank. I called the bank after an hour and there is no fax yet.
I have not admitted or denied this debt, only that I thought I had paid it already.
What should I do?

First thing I would do is call Sears and see if they still show
