Okay I have two collection accounts with this company, I have not been notified by them and the only reason I know this is, is because of my credit report. Should I call them and see if they can settle and if so how low should I try to get the balance down to? It's for a bank account I had several years ago and the balance is high because of all the repeated fees I was assessed. The balance on one is 798 and the other is 252.

Opinions please :)

That is a big difference in balances. You could call them to get information like the full account number and amount they are currently claiming, but you have to be careful with that...they could try to pressure you or strong-arm you into a payment.

What you should do is send them a validation letter, explaining that you have seen the accounts on your credit report and have noted some discrepancies. Ask for detailed documentation such as the complete statements, the signed contract, proof of their ownership of the account or proof of their right to collect and any licensing they hold as relevant to your state laws.

How old is this debt? You could 'wake them up' so to speak if you go this rout and they can start aggressive collecting. lawfully they can't start collecting on it once you have DV sent in, but that usually doesn't stop them. You will need to be ready to see it all the way through if it comes down to it, such as taking them to court if they violate the laws. (sometimes this is the only way to get rid of an account on your reports.) You can also look up 'one two punch', it details a method to get accounts removed from your credit reports by DVing the CA and when they get the DV you then dispute it with the CRAs, if the CA verifies the account they have violated because doing anything with the CRAs is considered continued collection activity.

Check with your secretary of state...they should be able to let you know. If they are not to you add that to the letter, informing them that in any case they are collecting illegally as they need to hold a license and don't, that they should immediately remove the account from your reports as they can't legally collect and reporting on the CRAs is considered collection activity.

I have searched every where trying to find out if RJM is registered in florida as a CA, I have been getting the rin around. I found the phone number for FL secretary of state and when I call it just rings and rings (that seems odd to me), where else can I possibly find the info to see if they are registered?
