I have experienced debt collectors many times making this threat of referring some case number to an attorney in my area. Debt collectors do their job by scaring you into paying and stressing you into paying. Ask them what this is about, what do they mean by referring the case number to an attorney in your area, what is going to happen.
The FDCPA and maybe even the laws in your state are there to protect you from illegal harassment. The best evidence of illegal harassment is a recording of the phone call. Record the calls if legal in your state because debt collectors will always lie and never admit to saying something that will get them in trouble. Then contact a consumer lawyer to help you sue the debt collection company and the collector. That will stop the calls for sure.
