Do we owe and can small payments be refused ?

When Heilig Meyers went bankrupt, my husband and I had an account with them. Our account was always in good standing.
I tried to pay the payments for two consecutive months and was informed by the people (cannot remember company now) that took over the payments that they didn't have an address to send payments to yet.
The company that is saying they are the Creditor now is:Palisades Collection, LLC
My husband and I separated later that year and didn't put in a change of address.
Long story short.... at the end of 2007 we received a notice from a collection agency that we owed x amount of dollars to this account.
We tried setting a payment plan because we knew we had purchased from Heilig Meyers.
The payments they asked for were out of out budget. We sent a very small amount here and there usually ten dollars and once 50.00.
We missed one month and were then sent a letter from a different agency who defiantly wants way more than we can afford.
We cannot afford my husbands wages to be garnished. We want to pay but they are unwilling to accept less that 223.00 a month. I am disabled and he gets paid 335.00 a week before he is taxed.
I am now wondering do we even owe? The company went bankrupt..we tried to pay the company we, were informed was taking over and couldn't.

Hi, welcome to the site.
Do you know what the date of last activity (DOLA) (when the debt first became delinquent).
How much is the debt?
What state do you live in?
I believe you are still liable for the debt, they do not have to take payments. The question is can they validate the debt and show they have a legal right to collect the debt.
Is this debt showing up on your credit reports?
