i have been calling collection agencies all day setting up payments and getting them reduced

is this the best way to go about things or should i dispute some of them, some of the peopl,e i have called have no record of my social, and others it is completely impossible to find phone numbers for them

the ones im finding difficult are CBCS, NCO MEDCLR, and SUPERIOR ASSET MANAGEMENT

if anyone has any advice or knowledge of this kind of stuff i would be extremely appreciative.

hi--

I think that what you have done will bite you in the back side. Dealing with CA's over the phone is not ever a good idea unless you can legally record the call in your state. Over the phone, it is common for a debt collector to tell you anything in the world, as long as it makes you send them a payment. If any of these debts are old, they could be outside your state's statute of limitations, and when you send them a payment or admit responsibility for the debt then you just restarted the clock on that statute of limitations. SOL is important because once the debt crosses that line then they are not legally able to sue you over it, as long as you invoke SOL as your defense if they do.

I would not be surprised if the settlements you worked out were to suddenly disappear--the next time you deal with those collectors, they may say "I dont know what youre talking about but I dont have any settlement agreement here on your account...."

The best thing you can do in this situation is get EVERYTHING in writing from them. If you dont, youre asking to get screwed over. I do want to say that its a really good thing to see you working to pay off your debts! Sometimes we see people come in here and say "how do I get out of paying this?" and things like that. We do not advocate not paying legitimate debts on this forum, and its good that youre taking responsibility like this. But please---get everything in writing for your own protection.

As for the CA's you mentioned, NCO is particularly well known for breaking the laws regarding debt collection. If you have more specific info about the situations I am sure that many of us can offer more detailled advice.

skydivr7673 is SO right about that, I found out the hard way, please get any settlement in writing, this is very important. I have had 'so called' verbal agreements per telephone with many CA's only to find out later that it was all for not. Each and everyone I had a verbal agreement with all said they had no knowledge of any such agreement as there were no notations in my file to that effect, which placed me back at square one again, with added interest of course. :? I am still dealing with this, but this time with more knowledge of my rights, because of this forum.
