I recently made a settlement offer w/an older collection account still well w/in the sol. The balance was $1237, I settled the account for $638 (and they forgave $599, to keep me just under the $ amount which triggers mandatory reporting to the IRS).

I checked my credit report and it still shows a $599 balance w/$599 past due. Isn't my report supposed to report $0 balance/$0 past due, and indicate "settled collection account" or something along those lines?

I did have a letter sent to me that reads as follows, "Upon receipt of $xxx, this account will be considered satisfied and closed and a release letter will be sent". I also have a release letter they sent that indicates something similar. This wouldn't be enough?

You could dispute with the CRAs, send them copies of those letters. If that doesn't work you can send a letter to them that unless they remove the account, you will sue them for reporting a debt that no longer exists.

Did you actually have to pay taxes on that forgiven amount? Did they do a 1099? If so, use those records as well since if you paid taxes then you obviously no longer owe that amount.
