SOL letter?

I was contacted by a collection agency about a debt. They have the last payment in 2001. I don't believe the amount they are seeking is correct. I have asked for a debt validation letter. What do I do after I receive the letter? Since the last payment was 2001, can I just send send them a letter stating that it is passed the SOL?
