I’m making my last payment on my $380/month Americredit/GM Financial loan (what a f’in rip-off) this week. I’ve been out of payday loan hell for a little over a year now. Aside from my student loans, my credit cards (all current and manageable), and my last car payment, I don’t owe anybody. Things are really starting to take a positive turn for me. However, I'm kicking myself right now.
I called and cancelled my Comcast service at the end of July. I did have my mail forwarded (I moved), so I received my final bill around August 15 (with a stack of other forwarded mail), which subsequently got lost during the whole unpacking/cleaning mess. Fast forward to this past Friday night (Sep 14), when I said to myself, “I need to pay that Comcast bill.†So, Saturday morning I found the bill and submitted the payment via online bill pay thru my bank. I would’ve done it thru Comcast’s website, but I no longer have an account with them and I wasn’t able to log in.
So, I grabbed today’s mail about an hour ago, and what did I find…A COLLECTIONS NOTICE from Credit Protection Association regarding the bill. Does this mean Comcast charged this account off, which will be reflected on my credit reports as such? If so, that sucks big time! But like I said, I can’t blame anybody but myself for that one. It’s gonna suck to have a $140 charge off on my credit reports, though. If it does get reported I guess I’ll just have to suck it up.
What a way to spend a rare day off, huh?

They didn't necessarily charge it off. They may have just assigned it to a collection agency.
I suggest you call them and tell them you'd already sent payment when you received this collections notice.

It's very likely that due to the short amount of time and the nature of the bill (utility) it was simply assigned to the CA, not sold to them as Ohiogal said.
You can call comcast and tell them that you made an ach payment to them via your bank, and to unsick the collections agency. I doubt the CA is going to report anyway. Many companies like amazon, and municipal governments actually stipulate that the CA stop reporting to your credit after they are paid.
Update...
I called Comcast directly a few minutes after my original post. The automated recording on Monday (before the payment was applied) said that I had a ???zero balance???. However, the agent informed me that my account still showed me owing what I owed. I told him that I submitted the payment on Saturday. He said it probably wouldn???t update in their system until today (Wednesday), and that their CA would see it in their system and cease collection efforts. He also said that my CR shouldn???t be affected by this.
I called Comcast today and the recording said they received the payment yesterday. Also, I pulled my CR and neither agency had a charge off or collections entry regarding this debt as of yesterday. The collections notice was dated September 10, if that matters at all. If it comes down to it, I guess I can say I paid it before it showed up on my CR. I suppose I???ll see what happens.
