Collection Agency Accused of Stealing Money
June 4, 2007
A collection agency in Columbus, GA has been accused by at least one client of withholding money it collected on the company’s behalf, according to a story filed by local TV station WTVM.
The office of an Ophthalmologist in Columbus says that Cobra Collection Agency has been collecting past-due bills for it for months now, but hasn’t seen any of the money. The billing clerk for the practice said that they have been expecting a monthly check from the collection agency after the agency’s percentage was taken out, a typical arrangement for contingency collections. A local property management firm voiced the same concerns about Cobra for the story.
When WTVM contacted the collection agency, the firm’s owner explained that they had collected for the businesses but that the money was now gone. She explained that an employee had embezzled the money. The owner did tell the reporter that she intended to make good on all of the money collected on behalf of their clients.
There is no mention of police involvement in the story as of yet.

Interesting.....verrrrry interesting. And you're right, Law Student...probably happens more than we know - we just don't hear about it.
Gotta love the name of the collection agency involved, though - "Cobra" - I can just hear their company slogan now..."Cobra Collections - we STRIKE those nasty non-paying debtors!"
Hmm...anyone else find it amusingly coincidental that a collection agency chose to name themselves after a SNAKE? As in "snake-in-the-grass"??
Amazing. An employee of a collection company on the take??? Whod

Law Student,
Thanks for posting that. I did A/R in my old job and I only used one outside collection agency. It was in the first two years that I worked there but we always got paid per our agreement. After that, I was able to do it all on my own. Gives new meaning to paying the original creditor!

It was before I was employed (so I heard it secondhand)...so I don't know what came of it though.
