Sued by a creditor over old medical bills...

Okay, I am brand new here, but it looked like there were some people with a great deal of knowledge about how this all works.

Background: I have acquired a LOT of medical bills. Right now I am looking at somewhere around $30,000 in debt because of it. I recently found out that I am being sued by a creditor for a few cases that total $10,000. When I contacted them (case was in prelegal status) I told them I could only afford around $20 a month. It's all I had to spare...and I was turned down. I'll admit, I got nervous and said that I would try to make $50 a month and they said that while that would be an semi acceptable payment, it would not stop the case from moving into the courts.

Well, I have been informed that a process server has started coming to the house, and I imagine it is for that case. I don't have a lot of money, not even $50 a month. I'll admit, I should have paid these off in the beginning and things wouldn't be like this now. I was dumb and younger than I am now. But I am a single mom, barely making above minimum wage, and my entire paycheck goes to the bills that I have now and anything extra, isn't really extra when you have a kid (I'm sure others know how that goes!)

So there's the jist of it. I am freaking out because while I want to make this go away and pay it all off, I don't know how. And now its going to the courts and I am terrified of them garnishing my wages when I have so little to spare as is. I am already considering bankruptcy, but I was just starting to try and look for a house to rent with a couple of friends (makes for cheaper rent) so I don't know how that would effect it.

Please help! Advise! Prayers! Cookies! Anything!!

Bankrutpcy sounds like your only option...if you go to court and get a contingency judgment allowing you to make payments without being garnished, you are still going to be looking at payments of $50 or more. Miss a payment and they will swoop in for a garnishment.

That's what I was afriad of. I am only 24 so, I figure I can deal with the 7-10 years of that ghost following me...but will this prevent me from being able to rent a house? I am moving in with a couple who has excellent credit, if that helps at all.

Thank you
