My mother passed away in 1999 and my sister and I closed out all of her accounts and debt. We just got a letter from Tate & Kirlin Associates in her name at our address (where she never lived...she died 2 years before we moved here) that says she owed over $2000 but they'd settle for $800. After researching online, it seems like this company is a problem. Even if this debt was legit (which it isn't) it is way past the statue of limitations. Would writing to them to validate the debt involve us and our credit? Our name is not on the statement even but they somehow have our address. Would answering this letter get us involved??? Should we just ignore it?

Ignore all communication. Send these bottomfeeders a cease and desist letter. If they continue harassing you, calling your relatives, friends or at work, file a complaint against them with the AG and the FTC. If they threaten to have you arrested or something similar, file a complaint with the cops. There is no point in wasting time on sending a DV to these bottomfeeders.

since this pile of dogsh*t is even trying to collect on this they need a C&D with a strong intent to sue thrown in.sorry but since this is a lawbreaking turd of a bottomfeeder what good does AG,AND FTC complaints do?phrase the letter like this.

since this is not only not my debt, but the person passed away in 1999.i will not pay this period.furthermore any further communications with me,or anyone else on this, and i will sue.report this on my credit,or pull my credit, and i will sue.i do not owe this and will not pay it.i trust my position is clear.

send something like that OP,and know if they try anything after the C&D is a suable offense.do it!
