In order for a company to contact you, when they have your phone number, are they allowed to call other places looking for you? i.e. family, family businesses, dance studio

I think thats how it works, they can call these places if you provided the information like as references. If it's for a debt, I don't think they are allowed to discuss that with them.
My cousin had defaulted on a payday loan and the place called me last week because she put me down as a reference. They were just asking me to verify her address and phone number. I wouldn't give them any information, I just said I will have her contact you.

Generally a collection agency cannot call third parties (even listed as a reference) if they have your current phone number and address. (location information) However, just because the law is on the books does not mean they will follow it.

Original creditors are not bound by the fdcpa, but your state laws may limit communications by an original creditor.

Either way, you should be able to stop third-party contacts by letting the company know your current phone number and address.
